The Goose Girl
Summary
In The Goose Girl, Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee is a princess living in Kilendree. She is raised knowing that she will be the next queen of Kilendree. On her sixteenth birthday her mother tells her that in order to keep peace between the kingdoms she needs to travel to Bayern and marry the prince. On her three month journey there her guards and lady in waiting turn on her planning to kill her. She escapes and her lady in waiting, Selia, becomes the new “princess” of Kilendree. Isi, the real princess, makes it to Bayern and becomes the new goose keeper under the King’s direction and reign. While there, Isi makes new friends and learns to live like the common folk within the kingdom. She is frustrated with her circumstances and scared for her life as she is being hunted by her guards. However, she learns gratitude and becomes humble, which are qualities that help her time and time again.
There are many times where Isi’s life is almost taken. Her faithless guards torment her every thought and action. She is told of Bayern’s plan to make war on Kilendree and she knows that she has to do something to save her kingdom. Isi and her loyal friends go to Selia and Prince Geric’s wedding to stop the war and for Isi to claim the throne. Isi is able to convince the King that she is the princess and there is a battle between her guards and the Bayern guards. The Bayerns win and Isi ends up stopping the war and marrying prince Geric and living happily ever after.

Kindness is a virtue
As Isi has to live as a servant under the rule of the king, she begins to understand the situations that most people live in. She is able to fully contemplate the lives of peasants and servants and through this she develops a deeper kindness that helps her develop friendships and see the kingdoms in a new light.

Appearance Isn't Everything
When Isi is born she is treated like the princess she is and taught that she will be the next queen of Kilendree. She works to have the appearance and confidence of a queen. As Isi's story unfolds she comes to understand that appearances have a sense of deceit and she is so much more than expensive gowns and a pretty face.

Quote:
"There is no such thing as royal blood. I believe we are what we make ourselves, and as such, you, Crown Princess, are nothing"(78).
Isi has to build a life out of nothing. She has been treated like royalty from birth and now she is forced to learn to live as a servant. This quote encapsulates much of the meaning within the story and briefly describes following events. It is monumental because Isi does not fall to the destructive words of Selia, but rather grows stronger as she finds who she is.

Essay Overview: Appearance is not everything and sense of self is found when inner beauty is recognized.
